VelumVelvet turns a deeply personal chapter into music on ‘Woman’s Burden’, a stark piano-led single that traces songwriter Donna James’ journey from feeling trapped towards creative freedom.
The song began life as a poem written in 2011, during a period she now describes as her “years of hush.” More than a decade later, she has returned to those words as VelumVelvet, transforming an account of her former life into an intimate portrait of struggle, release and artistic evolution.
Musically, ‘Woman’s Burden’ deliberately keeps its foundations exposed. Piano and strings surround her vocal without overwhelming it, allowing the emotional contrast between confinement and eventual freedom to drive the track. While recorded at home in the UK, the project became an international collaboration, with production assistance from South America and mixing completed in Spain.
For VelumVelvet, ‘Woman’s Burden’ is ultimately about finding the courage to be heard, by turning an old poem into the beginning of something new.
