‘Squelettes’ is the new bilingual single from Hot Tramp Records artist Maryze.
The track is a gritty, dark pop tune which features Polaris shortlisted rapper Backxwash and is the follow-up to her spring video release of ‘Muse’.
The track has an industrial, percussive beginning, with post apocalyptic gurgling synths providing a foundation for the melodic pop wanderings of Maryze’s vocal lines.
The track twists along, ricocheting down deeper and darker paths with memorable phrasings and melodies linking with the heavy beats and production.
Further on, the introduction of the higher end synth beams out of the darkness to introduce us to the featured artist before a series of sonic whirls, backing vocals and layered chords bring us the huge final chorus.
The following rap section by Backxwash is a great change in elevation and provides some vocal grit and bite which feels visceral and brings to the song a great finale of intent.
The track is a dichotomy of sounds but these contrasts between hard and soft, roughness and tenderness balance well.
Credit goes to the producer Margo who has managed to balance these elements so that it feels like the two ends of the spectrum unite to create a whole rather than feeling at odds with each other.
It is at once a synthesiser hook laden groove demonstration of ethereal pop melody and also a dark, stuttering, powerful journey through the darkest corners of the mind.
