Q&A: Mimi Bay

We spoke to Swedish artist Mimi Bay, a multi-instrumentalist who makes dreamy DIY bedroom-pop. Alongside music, Mimi is also a popular Youtuber with 226,000 subscribers.

Read the Q&A below for the low-down on her latest single, writing process and more.

Hi Mimi, Tell us about your latest single ‘really’ – what inspired you to write the track?

I was playing around with chords and lyrics and ended up with something I really liked. I had to let myself be creative with it and took inspiration from the feeling that the chords gave me to form the melodies.

You started writing music at age fourteen, has your song writing process changed much throughout the years?

I change all the time. I think changing and evolving, growing as a person, is something beautiful. I’ve always had this need to create, and used what I had on hand whenever I could.  For example, I found lyrics on diary pages from when I was around eight years old.  When I was around eleven, I started recording songs on my iPod in Garageband. I would add midi instruments, and eventually found my love for harmonies.

Now I produce music on my computer, which is a big world to create with. I still sit on my bed alone in my room with my guitar just singing about what has been on my mind- just like I did with my ukulele at age thirteen. I’d like to think my songwriting process has grown more than it has changed over the years.

Being a multi-instrumentalist, do you have a favourite instrument to play?

Even when I have a lot of options, the guitar will always be my favourite.

As a popular YouTuber, are you now looking to pursue music more than vlogging?

I never saw myself as a Youtuber, I did it for fun and as a creative outlet. Music has always been what I wanted to do; it has always been a part of me. I don’t really want to call YouTube a “phase”, but I never intended it to become what it became. I was just messing around having fun. I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I do know that I’m so thankful for everything, for all the love and support.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to Pink Moon by Nick Drake a lot this week – great album!

Your debut EP is expected to release some point this year, can you tell us anything about it?

This EP will be like my mind handed to you on a silver platter.

How have your YouTube subscribers reacted to your music so far?

I think my followers genuinely like it. They’ve been so kind and so supportive, sharing the song I put out and constantly messaging me with kind words.

Dream collaboration?

I think I have to say Oscar Lang. He’s one cool dude.

Finally, do you have any plans to perform in the UK anytime soon?

Unfortunately nothing is planned, but I’d love to in the future!
