Q&A Interview: Kiara Nelson

LOCK Magazine sat down for a chat with rising star and recent Sony signee Kiara Nelson, following the release of her latest single, ‘Kisses For Breakfast’.

Hi Kiara, welcome to LOCK! For any new listeners, how would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as sweet, catchy and confident. It is music that makes you want to dance and feel empowered!

The urban-pop in your sound really matches with the soft tones in your voice, is this music you’ve always been into or has your love for this style of music grown as you’ve become an artist?

I would say this sound is what I’ve always wanted to do I just hadn’t discovered it in myself until I met my current team.

We know of your love of Britney (a true 90’s icon!), which other artists would you say inspire your music?

Britney’s a legend! Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello are my biggest inspirations in music. Love their music and they definitely inspire me musically. And as women.

You grew up in Finland but you were born in Florida, we bet you’ve got loads of great childhood stories. Would you say your Finnish-American roots inspire your writing?

Yes I was born in Jacksonville but I’ve never lived in America. Oh yes, a lot of childhood stories for sure… I’d say the American in me definitely inspires my writing.

Usually in Finland they stick to Finnish music but I’ve always known I wanted to sing in English and aim internationally.

Did you always know you wanted to perform? Which has been your favourite performance to date?

I’ve always known. I’ve been singing my entire life and as a child always entertaining people.

It’s so hard to choose a favorite performance but I think one of them has to be LIMF festival last summer in Liverpool.

I performed with M-22 infront of 40 000 people, still feels surreal!

Congratulations on your recent signing with Sony! How does it feel to be partnered with one of the biggest names in the industry?

Thank you! It feels incredible. I’m so lucky to be signed with them and have the most amazing team.

It’s honestly a dream come true. Will never forget signing day, it just didn’t feel real… I was so happy. And still am.

We’ve heard you were once brought up on stage by Justin Bieber during one of his concerts – tell us everything! How did it happen? What was it like?

This was a crazy one for sure… It was my first proper performance so imagine how nervous I was!

I joined The Knocks on stage as they were opening up for Justin and needed a female singer for one of their songs.

The best thing is, I got to do it twice! The crowd were so loud and happy even if they had no idea who I was, felt very welcoming.

It was an amazing experience and something I’ll never forget. I don’t think he remembers me though haha.

We can see your love of fashion on your Instagram profile (@kiaranelsson), how would you describe your style and where are your favourite places to find new outfits?

I love fashion and beauty etc. Happy you like my page!

My style inspiration is Kylie Jenner for sure, I can’t afford to dress like her quite yet though haha.

I buy most of my clothes from Pretty Little Thing, Topshop, Bershka and Zara.

You’ve established yourself as an artist at a young age and we know the message of your music is to inspire the listener. So, what’s the best piece of advice you can give female artists looking to break into the music industry?

The best advice would be to never give up and always believe in yourself even if no one else would.

You’re your own biggest critic. It’s also crucial to not compare yourself to others, that doesn’t help yourself in any way.

Be yourself and be kind, practise and do it for yourself and not others and you’ll go a long way.
