Bec Sandrige is someone you want on your radar asap. With her unmistakable voice and love for Shania Twain, she’s someone after our own hearts. Working witha number of top people includign Lucy Taylor and Dave Jenkins Jr on her new single “Cost Of Love”, we caught up with Bec to talk about the single and her forthcoming EP Lost Dog.
Hey Bec, how’s the year been for you so far?
Hello! My year (probably like most people) started off pretty darn weird, but definitely getting into the ~swing~ of things now. I’ve recently enrolled in a Masters Of Music Therapy which had been pretty amazing and just gearing into writing for my next album…
Your new single “Cost of Love” is a glorious indie-pop anthem, can you tell us what inspired it?
Its kinda inspired by the idea of Shania Twain + Daft Punk having a gay baby, sonically. But more so, the song was kinda written about a co-dependent relationship where we were somewhat constantly asking “how do you know when to call it?” and “is this worth?” losing ourselves as individuals over.
It’s the first release since your debut album in 2019, how have you spent the last three years (other than controlled by a global pandemic)?
Funnily enough, I spent a large amount of the first half of the lockdown (pandemic-times) writing a score for a theatre company. It’s a production called Ishmael, which is a near-future, space type thing – it’s on at the Sydney Opera House in 2023 which is pretty neat and a bucket list thing for me. Other than that, doing my Masters, attempting to get fit, reading, nothing too extraordinary…
“Cost of Love” is also taken from your forthcoming EP Lost Dog, what can we expect to hear on the EP?
The EP is definitely a lot meatier and a little darker to my previous releases. There’s also a wee duet, which is new territory and some sort of remix.
Which three artists would you say have influenced your music the most?
Leslie Feist, Kate Bush and Robyn.
What’s the rest of 2022 got in store for you?
Releasing an EP, touring Australia and hopefully getting over to the UK/EU soon!
