Oxford 6 piece Indie-alternative extraordinaires The People Versus, make a captivating return with the captivating, spacious latest single, ‘Squares.’ Known for their dreamy indie-pop sound which has seen the band gain recognition across BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X, and BBC Introducing, the band continue their growth following their recent UK tour.
The new single ‘Squares’ weaves together layers of intricate synths, a tight lo-fi beat and driving bass to capture a danceable yet melancholic soundscape, once again showcasing the band’s ability to craft interesting yet accessible sonic backdrops comparable to Future Islands. Topped with the angelic, yearning and ethereal vocal delivery of lead singer Alice Edwards, the track is given an emotive depth as layers of harmonies carry the track forward to the spacious, London Grammar-esque final section.
Inspired by Alice’s return to her Welsh roots and a digital apocalypse scenario, ‘Squares’ explores the final digital messages of love in our increasingly face-to-faceless world: “The last communication you have with someone might be via text, not voice – and if the world is unplugged all of a sudden, the ghosts of these messages in the ether.”
