Amber-Simone‘s been Workin’ hard and its all paying off!
Amber-Simone packed out Bermondsey Social Club, Wednesday evening at her debut London headline show. Bermondsey Social Club is a quirky venue in South London; it sits under railway arches and you are admitted in through a tiny door that leads to a hidden urban treasure cove.
Having never heard Amber-Simone before, this was my first experience and I could feel the audience’s anticipation brewing. Arriving on stage with a four piece band, the crowd was applauding before she even sang a word. Her music combines beautifully soothing vocals, intriguing rhythms, and adventurous chord sequences in the genres of R&B and funk.
‘Taught Me Better’ was a personal gig highlight for myself and stood out to me. Her band uses some interesting musical patterns. The funk bass lines and 70s style guitar licks are unforgettable, blended with her vocal hook that sings ‘feels so good’. ‘Strawberry Kisses’ is stylistically retro and showcases Amber-Simone’s writing ability as she reminisces ‘Strawberry kisses / I never knew it’d taste so sweet / Talking my language’. Displaying a thriving rapport with her audience, Amber proved herself to be a dynamic and engaging performer as she conducted her crowd and they danced to her grooves.
Amber-Simone’s forthcoming EP ‘For Those Moments’ is out Tuesday. Don’t sleep on this artist.
