EP Review | Ina Wroldsen’s “Matters Of The Mind”

It’s not too often that a critically-acclaimed and award winning artist drops a body of work that brings such straight-talking lyricism whilst melodic beats carry on in the background, but Ina Wroldsen has released ‘Matters Of The Mind’ and it’s one to listen to time and time again.

‘You’ve got me begging for more’ is one lyric from the addictive track ‘More’ and it’s got this writer hitting the replay button time and time again.  There’s the violins in the background, but then there’s the beats underlined the vocals that just leave any listener needing more.

The Norwegian songstress has a history of creating this type of feeling.  Having been the songwriter of massive hits such as ‘Symphony’ with Clean Bandit, ‘Alarm’ by Anne Marie and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ with Calvin Harris, it’s clear to see that she knows how to pull on those heartstrings.

Whilst being a mentor on the Norwegian The Voice and working with all those artists mentioned earlier she’s still humble by talking about not being impressed by numbers by saying “It’s not about writing a hit, but telling a story, expressing something true through the lyrics and the melody.”

The cool, collected beats and vocals on ‘Fire’ is the most interesting part of the four track production.  The track itself is vulnerable by talking about the day her son will grow up and leave her – a topic that can make any parent weak at the knees at the thought of that happening.

‘Fire’ is a track full of emotion, but it’s a subtle emotion as it’s not a ballad, there’s no loud instruments, it’s a calm track that knows how to grab any listener’s attention with it’s lack of drama and overwhelming thoughts.

The new E.P is here and Ina Wroldsen is an artist that’s here to stay.
