Cassandra Liu didn’t wait for a label, a producer, or a studio. She built her debut album in a walk-in closet.
“Chaos Is Me,” the lead single from Liu’s debut record Madison Boulevard, is the sound of someone who decided to do everything herself. Every decision belongs to her. For a genre as sonically dense as hers, that’s no small thing.
The track started with a conversation. A friend told Liu that chaos wasn’t something to fear, that it meant change, and that the best things come from change. Liu took that idea and pushed it further, drawing on Zhuangzi’s Butterfly Dream, a classical Chinese philosophical text, to build a track about inhabiting chaos rather than running from it. The result is cinematic, and completely her own.
What makes it more remarkable is that Liu is a senior data scientist by day. Music isn’t her fallback. It’s something she built in parallel, on her own terms, with her own resources.
Madison Boulevard, her debut album released in 2025, is the full realisation of that vision. Ten tracks, one architect.
In an industry that still underrepresents women behind the production desk, Liu isn’t making a statement about it. She’s just getting on with it.
