Last week I had the pleasure of catching Talulah Ruby at the BritYard off Regent Street in London.
The venue, nestled in the basement of their storefront offered the perfect setting to witness Talulah’s enchanting set. Having created an intimate speakeasy vibe with the space and with London’s first all-British wine and spirits bar fully stocked the only thing left to do was grab a drink and enjoy the show.
Talulah opened with her first track immediately captivating the audience, drawing them into her world. Hypnotising the audience, Talulah utilised a singing bowl which oscillated throughout the room before her isolated vocals came through along with a steady flow of ambient sounds and synths gently overlapping in a calming loop. Once the track finished a stunned silence was in the air, Talulah then explained her inspiration for the set, calling it a ‘deep listening’ experience aimed as a way to relax and explore your inner thoughts.
Throughout her set, Talulah did just that, transporting the audience into an almost meditative state through a backdrop of soft strings, fingerpicked guitar loops and ambient soundscapes that fixated the audience throughout. Improvising as she went the set included adaptations of previously released tracks along with songs that were fully improvised.
Overall the set was a delight to watch offering rich textured sounds married with experimental vocal modulation, manipulating volume and pitch throughout to create sounds that seemingly danced through the room. The set combined experimental electronic music with what can only be described as a sonic sensory experience that’s difficult to put your finger on, you’ll just have to go watch Talulah Ruby to experience it yourself.
