There is a sense of true identity in Sun Child’s latest track “Ghost” not often displayed by acts in their early years. The Jacksonville, FL group (founded by lead vocalist and songwriter Brooke Garwood in 2023) is making a name for themselves in the area, building off of Garwood’s former solo project. Inspirations from Searows and Indigo De Souza are clear, a certain gentle and melancholic quality balancing out with the darkness of Billie Eilish indie in the Patrick-Taylor recorded singles.
A mix of strings and added effects encapsulate Garwood’s pleading questions as she wonders where her loved one has gone – and perhaps why they left so casually in the first place.
The music video, which sees Garwood walking around a nearly empty beach beside someone dressed in a sheet, is hauntingly beautiful all the same. She wanders around a haunted house, the bright lights and gothic decorations a sharp contrast from the pastel ocean scenes. The underlying eeriness is palpable, a dichotomy of loss and longing, or of sweet reminiscence and bitterness.
