There’s something compelling about electronic music that can hold both physical intensity and emotional release in the same moment. On her debut single, “The Light”, Shak-T turns that tension into a statement of resilience, pairing heavy basslines and dancefloor-focused production with a deeply personal story of rebuilding and rediscovery.
Released on 15 October, the track marks the first chapter in a forthcoming four-track EP from the electronic artist and DJ, Shakti Wicked! Maragh. Created in collaboration with producer Jack Gourlay, “The Light” draws on the immersive textures of electronica and the driving energy of club music, with an emotional core that extends beyond the dancefloor.
For Shak-T, the road to making music has been anything but conventional. Once balancing medical studies with nights spent dancing at raves, her life changed dramatically following a fall beneath a dance platform’s safety rail that left her with a fractured back and a physical disability. The experience brought an abrupt shift in direction, forcing her to reconsider what movement, creativity and a future in music could look like.
Rather than abandoning the world that had shaped her, Shak-T found new ways to remain connected to it. Vinyl DJing, warehouse sound systems and festival sets became part of a gradual return to music, eventually leading her towards songwriting and performance in her own right. “The Light” emerges from that process, carrying the weight of personal experience without losing sight of the communal energy that makes electronic music so powerful.
Its appeal lies in that balance. Heavy basslines and electronic textures provide the track with a physical, club-oriented foundation, while its emotive atmosphere gives the production a more introspective dimension. It’s a meeting point between the individual experience of overcoming adversity and the collective release of the dancefloor, where personal struggles can be transformed into something shared.
The title suggests clarity after a period of uncertainty, but “The Light” is less interesting as a straightforward story of triumph than as a marker of artistic renewal. Shak-T’s journey has involved adapting to circumstances she never anticipated, finding another route into a world that remains central to her identity. That sense of reinvention gives the single its wider significance: the possibility of discovering a new creative voice without losing touch with the one that came before.
The release also establishes the direction of Shak-T’s forthcoming EP, introducing an approach that brings together dancefloor energy, emotional expression and the textures of contemporary electronica. Her decision to prioritise Bandcamp, with distribution across platforms excluding Spotify and Amazon, further reflects a release strategy that places the music at the centre of its own ecosystem.
As a debut, “The Light” serves as both an introduction and a declaration of intent. It presents an artist reconnecting with music on her own terms, transforming a difficult personal chapter into the beginning of something new. For Shak-T, the dancefloor remains a point of connection, but now there is another role to inhabit: not just the DJ behind the decks, but the artist telling her own story.
