After a thunderous run of releases in recent years, including their highly-praised debut EP ‘Defence Mechanisms’ in 2021, Sydney-based four-piece Second Idol have now made their eagerly-awaited return to deliver the explosive new single ‘Boxing Ring’.
Marking their first piece of new material in two years and accompanied by a brilliant new video, directed by Cameron Davies’, ‘Boxing Ring’ sees them return to the fold with one of their most compelling efforts to date. Embarking on more of that rich and euphoric alt-rock energy they have been developing recently, as well as some passionate Karen O-inspired vocals layered throughout, they reintroduce themselves as true innovators on the rise right now.
Adding about the new track, lead singer Kate said, “Boxing Ring is a reflection on being a woman in the music industry. It can be a fucking circus. It’s informed by the barriers women in music face. It’s about our aspirations, dreams and struggles. That women, non-binary and trans musicians are often treated as diversity trophies, novelised, and not taken seriously. We’re constantly pitted against each other and cut down. It feels as though we’re thrown into a boxing ring with each other, fighting for scraps, where often the more femme-presenting individual wins and men leer from every corner. Join us in the ring to fight our way out.”
They may not have been as active these last few years, but Second Idol are clearly still very much on top of their creative game here. Brimming with an electrifying presence from start to finish, ‘Boxing Ring’ is a comeback that was certainly worth the wait.
