Near the end of last year, LA-based artist ZIAH released her highly-praised pop anthem ‘Higher Love’, a track that has seen her build upon her already immersive reputation these last few years. Brimming with a fresh and dynamic aesthetic from start to finish, she is shining amongst the new music scene right now, ready to take on 2024 at full pelt.

And with her eagerly-awaited debut EP currently in the works, we took the opportunity to find out more about her influences and what she has experienced during her tenure so far.

Can you tell us a bit about your musical background and how you got started in music?

My musical journey kicks off in the electrifying world of Musical Theatre. When I got my first guitar, a whole new universe of sonic possibilities opened up to me. Crafting my own tunes and shaping melodies became a passion. Then came the beauty of recording studios, where I couldn’t get enough of translating raw emotions into tracks that truly resonate. Each strum, each riff, each lyric, it’s all a part of my musical DNA. And don’t even get me started on live instruments – there’s nothing like the rush of real-time energy! For me, music is all about storytelling, packing a punch of emotion and drama into every three-minute masterpiece

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, both past and present?

My musical tastes are like a melting pot of flavours! I’m all about diving into everything from catchy pop melodies to soul-stirring rhythms and electrifying rock vibes. When it comes to influences, there is a wide range of artists—legends like Journey, The Eagles, Aretha Franklin, and Etta James. Each of them brings their own special sauce to the table, painting vivid stories with just their melodies.

Could you share any memorable moments or experiences that have shaped your musical journey so far?

The memories that stick with me the most are the thrilling moments of crafting a song from its inception to its polished finish. There’s an incomparable joy in hearing a song come to life, from that initial spark of an idea to its fully realised form after mixing and mastering.

How do you express your personal experiences and identity through your music?

In my music – I tell stories. Each lyric, each beat, it’s like I’m painting a picture of my life. It’s not just a song; it’s a journey through my experiences, set to a catchy melody. From the words that flow to the tunes that groove, it’s all about keeping it genuine.

Have you faced any challenges or obstacles as a female musician, and if so, how have you overcome them?

In the world of music, obstacles can be met. It’s all part of the ride! Think of it like a road trip rather than a fixed destination. So, how do you navigate this musical journal? Stay laser-focused and never forget the spark that ignited your passion for music in the first place.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music?

The essence of a song’s theme depends on the subject matter. Whether it’s a story of love’s triumphs or a reflection on personal growth, the underlying thread that unites them all is the journey towards growth and resolution. It’s the transformative arc that resonates deeply with listeners, regardless of the topic at hand. Ultimately, it’s this journey towards growth that infuses each melody with timeless significance and emotional resonance.

Can you talk about your creative process and how you go about writing and producing your music?

Sometimes, it begins with the strumming of my guitar at home. As melodies flow, I refine them, moulding them into something captivating. Alternatively, amidst collaborative jam sessions with fellow musicians, sparks ignite, and a song is made.

How do you hope your music will resonate with your audience, especially with other aspiring female musicians?

I aspire for my music to resonate universally, transcending all genders. It’s about weaving narratives that speak to our experiences, fostering connections that transcend individuality. Whether through storytelling or soulful melodies, I aim for my music to strike a chord with others, even if it touches just one soul.
