Hope, love, enchantment
‘Mr. Right’ is one of your most personal releases to date. At what point did you realise this story was something you wanted to turn into a song?
It was really a spur-of-the-moment thing. Love and heartbreak have always been my fuel for creativity. When I had the melody in my head, I just knew what the song was going to be about.
Did writing the song feel like a milestone in your personal growth as well as your artistic development?
For sure! Every song I write becomes catchier and more cohesive. It’s definitely a dopamine hit!
Can you talk us through the writing process for ‘Mr. Right’? Did the lyrics or melody come first, and how quickly did the song take shape?
The first version of the melody came first. Typically, I play around with different melodies in voice notes. Whenever I have a melody stuck in my head for over a day, I build on it further. I knew I wanted to keep it in the realm of “Make You Feel” (my previous lead single), so I kept the lyrics playful and diaristic – as if someone had access to my inner thoughts and hopes. Writing the song and recording scratch vocals took a few days. After that, I hopped on Zoom with my producer (IG: prodbyzbeatz), and we wrapped everything up in two sessions.
New York City can be both romantic and challenging when it comes to relationships. How has living there influenced your songwriting and perspective on love?
I’d like to say I was quite naive moving here. I dated a lot with misguided intentions despite always being a hopeless romantic. Then again, I was young, and dating around was so fun – that is, until feelings get involved. I had a lot of solo time to reflect on what I value in relationships and find a partner who exceeds that. Funny enough, he’s been really involved with this release despite having zero music business background. Working with creatives in New York, like my coach (IG: richxmusic), helped me build my artistic vision and style. I love being surrounded by creatives who are open-minded and value the grind!
Many pop songs focus on heartbreak or uncertainty. What drew you towards celebrating a healthy and fulfilling relationship instead?
Honestly, writing songs about heartbreak was what I initially started with. It got to the point where I started questioning what was wrong with me and decided to do something about it -therapy!! Working on so many breakup songs and having to create breakup content each time felt like a lot. After therapy, I noticed that the type of love songs I grew up with didn’t really exist anymore, and I felt inspired to start changing that.
And finally, what’s next for you after this release? Can fans expect more music in a similar vein, or are there new directions you’re excited to explore?
You can definitely expect more music in a similar lane! I’m pretty set on this artistic direction, but I want each release to feel more elevated and creatively challenging than the last.
