Following the release of her hauntingly beautiful new track “Lonely” we got to chat with singer-songwriter ALI.
  • Hi Ali! Can you please start by introducing yourself?

I’m Ali, I’m an independent artist based in London. I moved here at 18 to study songwriting and create some music. I take part in every step of my music journey, from the writing to the production and publishing, all from my tiny home studio.

  • What made you want to pursue a career in the music industry?

I’d love to say I always knew I wanted to do this, but I’d be lying. I never quietly knew what I wanted to do. I always loved music and theatre but never found myself writing songs till I had so much time to explore it during the quarantine. We all know those were really tough months, and for someone being so far away from home and family, that was a great escape. Thanks to that, I realised I really enjoyed all the process of creating songs and being able to share them with so many people.

  • Who are your main musical influences?

I’d say Taylor Swift and LÉON. I believe Taylor Swift is a great storyteller. She really inspires me when it comes to creating a scene in which to develop the story of the song, and LÉON’s music style gets really close to the concept that I would like to develop in my music. Even though they’re my main inspiration, I always like to have the doors open to other artists or genres. We always do musical research before starting the production of the next song.

  • Tell us more about your latest release “Lonely”

This song was born from the anger and frustration after a really awful moment. I wrote it as a way to relieve my grief. As I wrote it in the heat of the moment, the lyrics faithfully express what I was feeling by the time. I wrote it like 2 years ago and it has really helped me go through and heal some wounds. Now I look past it and somehow feel thankful for moments like those which have helped growing as a person and as a songwriter, being able to write beautiful songs as this one.

  • What do you want people to take from your music?

I’d like people to be able to identify with the stories in songs and feel whatever they might need to feel, that being nostalgia, relief, loneliness or happiness. I’d like people to feel they’re able to own them and make them personal to their own moments and experiences.
