NYC-based Stevie Bill has been showcasing her pop fluidity throughout the year by dropping singles that, despite being heavily rooted in pop, draw inspo from a variety of other genres. Her unique sound is laced with a witty outlook on life. Releasing her debut EP “Messy”, a collection of tracks that are both personal yet also incredibly relatable, Stevie’s introduction to the music world sees her thriving in her own lane. We caught up with the Dutch-English songwriter to chat about living life to the messiest.
Hi Stevie, your EP Messy is out in the world – how do you feel?
Hi! I feel super proud and happy. This was a childhood dream of mine.
Can you tell us about the writing process behind the EP?
My writing process is always about being inspired by music first. Finding that sound that excites me or that melody loop. Or some guitar chords. As long as it sparks some sort of emotion. For me it’s always in the instruments.
You’re currently based in New York, how has the American city influenced you and your sound?
It has influenced me immensely. I was introduced to hyperpop here through my roommate, a genre that I wasn’t super familiar with before. Apart from that this city makes you feel like the possibilities are endless, weather musically or creatively in general.

You recently supported rei brown in New York too – can you tell us about that?
Yes! That was absolutely an amazing opportunity. It was my first time opening for a bigger artist like Rei. I had helped him write some of his songs on his newest album Xeno. We became friends over the course of that. It was really fun playing a show for his fans and seeing how new people responded to my set. His fans are such cool people!!
We absolutely love all your singles so far, you seem to be pushing the boundaries of pop, is that something you wanted to do within your debut EP?
Thank you! Honestly, not intentionally. I don’t really have an intention before I write music. I really let my gut speak and afterwards I reflect and see how everything ties into each other. I think sometimes the music just decides for you. For me that is what makes being an artist exciting!!

Do you have a favourite single on the EP, and why?
Messy. That song is my baby. At the time I only just met my roommate Jacob. It was just one of those magical sessions where things just happen and suddenly there’s a song. It sparked the whole beginning of this EP for me.
Who’s one person you’d love to collaborate with?
Julia Michaels or Matty Healy. Both such amazing songwriters and people.
And finally, if your music was the lovechild of two other artists, who would they be?
EHHMM… only two?! The teletubbies and Bob Dylan… Queen Elizabeth and Beyonce… No for real at the moment I’ll go with Avril Lavigne and Kim Petras. But it changes all the time.
Thanks for chatting to us!
Thanks!!! xoxo
