Q&A: Erin Bloomer

17-year-old R&B artist Erin Bloomer recently released her debut single ‘Lately’. Referencing Mura Masa and Madison Beer as influences on the track, ‘Lately’ is a well-polished, mature debut from the singer. We caught up with her just before the release to speak about starting her career on Instagram.

Hey Erin, how are you?

Hiya! I’m doing great. Thanks for having me.

We love your R&B vibes over at LOCK, what’s your fave R&B song?

I’m so glad you like it! One of my faves at the moment would have to be “swervin” by A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and 6ix 9ine, it’s a bit of a banger

‘Lately’ is an utter bop, tell us what inspired the track.

Thanks so much! I actually wrote it for one of my best friends… it is about being with someone but they are being way too full on and into it when you just want to have fun. I wrote it because I wanted to help my friend realise that it is okay to not want to dive into something serious straight away, you are allowed to take things at your own pace and time.

Your career started by posting covers on Instagram, do you ever sit back and think about how far you’ve come?

I forget until someone says something to me about it and them I’m like “wow, I did that”… going from sitting in my bedroom at 12 years old recording covers to being in the studio recording my own EP with writers and producers who have worked with some of favourite artists is mad but I’m still looking forward!

For you it has been, but do you think social media is a key player in the music industry today?

I really think so. You can connect with fans directly, which is amazing. And it gives people a chance of being discovered by someone, even if they live on the opposite side of the planet. I think that is crazy.

Can we catch you live soon? We want to hear ‘Lately’ live!

At the moment I am focusing on making new music but maybe some time in the summer ?! But when I do you guys will be the first to know 😉

Finally, what’s your musical plans for this year?

After ‘Lately’, I’m releasing another couple of singles and then my EP this summer. And then of course making new music, working with some really cool people, and hopefully doing some live bits before the end of the year.
