Rotterdam-based singer and songwriter Daimy Lotus heads up the latest wave of pop-punk artists. With crashing guitars, electrified riffs and relatable lyrics, her music is not only infectious, but connects to all who listen. On her new single “Pathetic”, Daimy criticises the fuckboy dating trope to create an assertive statement of resilience. We caught up with Daimy to talk about the new single and what’s next for her.
Hi Daimy, how’s your summer going?
So far so good! I’m alive, moved into a lovely new place, I’m going on holiday to Spain next month and I have a new song out! Couldn’t be better!
You’ve just released your new single “Pathetic”, can you tell us what it’s about?
Pathetic is inspired by a stereotypical ‘fuckboy’ who manipulates his way through life trying to get each and every girl he wants. There wasn’t a specific person that came to mind while writing this song. I just had this kinda aggressive and disgusted feeling coming up while hearing the chords that were played, so I knew I had to tap into that and the fuckboy-theme is what came out of it. The fact that I couldn’t link it to one specific person is because I’ve had many messed up experiences where guys would just walk all over me, pushing my limits to get what they want and never even consider once what I wanted. And I know for a fact that every woman in my life has had at least one of these experiences. It’s messed up and it needs to change.
Your music feels really empowering and it’s definitely relatable to many of us, do you find inspiration in your own experiences?
Thank you so much! I value you saying that cause that’s exactly what I hope my music does. I wanna break taboos and encourage you to be your authentic self, without any shame. Empowering feelings you pick up through music can help with that. Speak up, wear that funny dress you are too scared to wear because if you do you might not fit in with ‘the rest’. Fuck that. Be you.
I want to build a community for those that feel unseen and unheard. A lot of people look surprised when I tell them I’ve been bullied for most part of my life. Well, I have, so I know what it’s like to not fit in, to not belong anywhere. That’s why it’s my mission to make sure the people who listen to my music do feel like they belong.
The new single has a real 00s Avril Lavigne vibe which we love! Would you say she’s influenced your music?
Sick! I was a big fan of her in my teen years so yes I would definitely say she has in a way. I went through different phases when it comes to listening to music though. Starting with the big pop-stars like Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani, later on more rock/punk, then R&B/soul and I even went through a very short dubstep phase haha.
What was your favourite album when you were growing up?
When I was around 7 years old I played Shakira’s album Laundry Service so much to a point where the CD – which I still have somewhere – is scratched, the case is broken and the album cover is fading. I loved loved loved listening, dancing and singing to this album. I always tried to imitate her bellydancing choreographies.
What can we expect from you throughout the rest of the year?
I’m planning on releasing just singles for now and in the meantime work towards an EP or album. Also I’m planning on doing more live shows which I’m super excited about. Since I live in The Netherlands most of the shows will be there but I had my first UK show a couple months ago and I want to do more! I’d say keep an eye on my socials if you like to stay updated on this.
And finally, if you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Damn, that’s a tough one cause there are so many people I would love to work with still. If it would be an artist collaboration I would love to do one with YUNGBLUD. His energy, his lyrics and his delivery is just nuts and so inspiring. Yeah man, if you happen to read this please reach out haha!
