An “awkward pop” pioneer, so they say, is what BRIT school graduate Belot has become labelled. Her brash, upfront lyricism about the everyday existence of humans has earned her acclaim within the music world and sees her garnering fans across the globe. While her singles have been deliciously infectious, Belot recently dropped her EP Harmless Fun – a collection of fun, straight-to-the-point songs. We caught up with Belot for a chat ahead of the EP.

Hey Belot, your new Harmless Fun EP is now out in the world! How does it feel?

It feels absolutely fabulous, it’s been a long time coming. I’ve had these songs in my back pocket and been gagging to get them out.

Your sound has often been labelled ‘awkward pop’- what does that mean to you?

Well what I’m hoping it means, is pop that’s honest and unapologetic, where you hear the lyrics and laugh a little because you’ve all been there. That’s the ultimate goal.

How long did it take you to write and record the EP?

I honestly have no idea, I WRITE A LOT of songs. I usually write between 3-5 songs a week, and obviously not all of them make the records. So I couldn’t pinpoint how long it actually took accurately. What I will say is I have literally been having the best time writing this last year. I’ve met so many inspirational artists and writers and I’m very grateful for the experiences that I’ve had.

It’s a really exciting pop sound, each track is in a world of its own. What’s your favourite track?

Well THANK YOU, I’m glad you think so! God my answer to this question changes all the time. Today It’s ‘Harmless Fun’. Harmless Fun was one of those songs that just sort of fell out, it was a sunny day, I made the demo and then went to play frisbee in the park. Vibes came correct that day.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I’m honestly such a music dork, I take inspiration from so many artists and records, absorb a mish mash of ideas and they sort of sway the direction of the next song I write. Some artists I love are Calvin Harris, Katy Perry and Noga Erez. At the moment my favourite song is a song called ‘I Ain’t Worried’ by One Republic. The song was written for the new Maverick Film by Ryan Tedder and a variety of brilliant songwriters.

Are we going to be able to get physical copies of the EP?

Not for the moment, but if the people ask for it, they shall get it!

What’s the rest of the year got in store for you?

More shows, more sessions, more fun, more carbs. MORE!
