Vibhuti is the debut album by Sis, the recording project of Jenny Gillespie Mason. This emotionally charged and musically exploratory piece of work is a profound testament to Mason’s spiritual journey, and we exclusively share it here at LOCK.

An album full of quirks and sounds you simply may not have heard before, this album was inspired by a series of transformative dreams that Sis had, and brought to the foot an expression of her own “vibhuti,” the Sanskrit term for the divine spirit within the human body.

The teachings of 20th-century Indian mystic Sri Aurobindo and his partner, the Mother, serve as the spiritual backbone of the album, profoundly influencing tracks like ‘Mother’s Grace’, ‘Bow to Your Wilderness’ and ‘Mystic Spider’.

The album is a rich tapestry of sounds, utilising instruments such as the Afghan rubab, harmonium, and Yamaha C-3 synth, creating a sparkling, joyful aural landscape. Vibhuti seamlessly bridges genres including new age, instrumental, synth-pop, jazz, and world music, showcasing Mason’s versatility and innovative spirit.

This is all perfectly represented in lead single ‘Splendor’, which is a masterful blend of spiritual and modern elements. The sitar and percussion intertwine seamlessly with Sis’ vocals, building to a crescendo that feels both introspective and expansive. The harmonious duet towards the climax of the track embodies the album’s conceptual arc, merging the personal and the universal, the intimate and the grand.

As the lead single from, ‘Splendor’ sets the stage for an album that seamlessly blends genres ranging from electro-pop to tropicalia to ambient, showcasing Mason’s unique and still captivating sound.

Released on Native Cat Recordings, Vibhuti invites listeners to embark on a spiritual and musical journey unlike any other, marking Sis as a significant new voice in the realm of contemporary music.
