There is something deliciously rebellious about finally putting yourself first. For independent artist Neona Ray, that revelation arrives in “Those Two Blue Eyes,” a vibrant new single that turns the messy business of people pleasing into an irresistibly polished piece of alternative pop. Produced by George Harris, the track brings rhythmic guitars, hip hop inspired drums and subtle 1980s flourishes together with Ray’s emotionally candid songwriting, creating a sound that feels nostalgic without getting stuck in the past. It is the kind of track that makes you want to dance while simultaneously reconsidering every time you said “yes” when you absolutely meant “please, no.”

At the centre of the song is Ray’s recognition that kindness does not have to come with a side order of self-sacrifice. Rather than focusing on one relationship, “Those Two Blue Eyes” captures the bigger experience of constantly giving more than you receive, then discovering that boundaries can actually be liberating. “Dark voodoo magic is what you will find” is a wonderfully unexpected lyric, transforming the strange, almost supernatural feeling of learning to protect your own energy into something playful. Ray’s philosophy is simple but powerful: sweetness and strength can exist behind the same eyes. For anyone who has ever confused being endlessly available with being a good person, the message lands.

Ray’s own story makes that newfound confidence all the more compelling. Born in Germany and now based in Houston, she spent her teenage years at international boarding schools before studying Mathematics at Royal Holloway, University of London, followed by a master’s in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Rice University. Music was never the obvious plan. After Hurricane Harvey devastated her Houston home in 2017, Ray began writing poetry as a way to process the aftermath, eventually finding songwriting through her connection with British musician Mick Matthews. What began as a private form of healing evolved into a full-time independent career, with Ray now overseeing everything from vocal arrangements and home-studio recording to artwork, royalties, distribution and promotion.

It is that total creative ownership that gives “Those Two Blue Eyes” its particular spark. Ray’s mantra, “tiny person, huge emotions,” could easily double as the title of her artistic universe, where bright colours, oversized earrings, Wonder Woman inspired wristbands and emotionally honest pop all belong in the same frame. With more than 50,000 monthly Spotify listeners, growing international attention and future plans that include a music video, live performances and new releases, Ray is entering a bigger era without losing the intimacy that got her here. “Those Two Blue Eyes” is not interested in becoming tougher for the sake of it. Instead, it celebrates something far more interesting: staying soft, staying sensitive and finally realising that protecting yourself can look incredibly good.
