East London-based, Swedish-born artist My Life As A Moth is set to unveil The Parade of the Starlet & the Broken Hearted – Extended Deluxe Edition, expanding the darkly immersive world she has created around her acclaimed debut album. Alongside the announcement comes the striking new video for the single ‘Closer To Earth’, a cinematic and emotionally charged piece that further reveals the depth of her unique artistic universe.
Blending post-punk, experimental rock, art pop and industrial textures, My Life As A Moth crafts a sound that is both unpredictable and deeply intimate. She describes her work as “genre-blended basement confessionals told through winding metaphors and obscure sounds and rhythms,” creating songs that transform raw emotional experiences into vivid, otherworldly landscapes.
‘Closer To Earth’ captures the essence of that approach. Spacious yet intensely personal, the track moves through lo-fi electronics, theatrical expression and moments of fragile melancholy, constantly shifting between processed vocals, sprawling electronic textures, syncopated live drums and sharp-edged guitar. Drawing on the fearless experimentation of artists such as Björk and the shadowy atmospheres associated with Chelsea Wolfe, the single exists in a state of constant transformation — unsettling, cinematic and captivating.
Speaking about the video, Sofia says: “Closer to Earth is a song inspired by the souls incarnation journey into the material plane, and the experience of having one foot in each world. The music video was an effort to reflect on what is real, perceived or an illusion as we are tethered to different realities, and drew influence from the philosophy of Plato’s Cave”
The origins of My Life As A Moth are equally surreal. The project began during lockdown, when Sofia found herself feeling lost and disconnected. Returning to a dusty keyboard she had not played for years, she discovered a dead moth trapped between the keys. Moved by its strange combination of sadness and beauty, she wrote the song ‘My Life As A Moth’ — a moment that became the foundation for an entire artistic identity.
That instinct to transform pain into something expressive sits at the heart of The Parade of the Starlet & the Broken Hearted. Written during a period of profound personal change and therapy, the 12-track album explores experiences of trauma, manipulation, coercive control and gaslighting, while also becoming a story of resilience, self-discovery and survival.
Through surrealism, symbolism and carefully constructed mythology, My Life As A Moth turns deeply personal experiences into a wider exploration of identity and healing. At the centre of the record are the figures of the “starlet” and her “parade of the broken hearted”, characters who carry beauty, empathy and integrity through a fractured world. The album exists in the space between darkness and hope: “the rose in the mud, the light in the dark, the growth that comes from hardships, the stars you see above a scrapyard.”
The album’s distinctive sonic identity was shaped by producers Keir Adamson and Ellie Mason of Voka Gentle, with additional engineering from Ben Christopher of Bat For Lashes. Together, they built a tactile sound world from unconventional sources, creating a custom sample pack using everyday objects including radiators, shelves, lentil bags and percussion. These familiar materials were transformed into unfamiliar, expressive sounds that mirror the album’s themes of reinvention and perception.
“Making music for me can feel like untangling a ball of yarn in my head and knitting something out of it,” says My Life As A Moth.
The project’s visual language has been developed alongside Video Creative Director and set designer Alex Kim, with videography and editing by Enyon. Together, they have created imagery that reflects the music’s fascination with symbolism, illusion and the uncertain boundaries between reality and imagination.
Since emerging, My Life As A Moth has built a growing reputation through sold-out performances at Paper Dress Vintage, sets at renowned venues including Oslo, The Boileroom and SJQ, and gained support from the likes of BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio Wales and Absolute Radio, as well as gaining a spot on Spotify’s Melomania.
With The Parade of the Starlet & the Broken Hearted – Extended Deluxe Edition, My Life As A Moth continues to expand a singular artistic world, one where emotional honesty, experimental sound and surreal storytelling collide. It is a project that turns inner turmoil into something strikingly vivid: a celebration of survival, transformation and the beauty found in broken places.
