Having released her debut EP release last May, Maddie Ashman’s has certainly found her feet and now returns to us with yet another intimate and autobiographical offering in the form of the emotive and relatable ‘I’d Rather Fall’. Sweetly she sings about the all too often painful teenage breakups many of us have experienced in our time and it instantly transports you back to those younger years. Her soft, endearing and distinctive vocals wrap you up in a whirlwind whilst the undulating, swirling melodies encapsulate the listener throughout. Blending a gorgeous array of classical and experimental influences, Maddie creates an innovative new pop tune that is sure to twinge your heart strings.
“I’d Rather Fall is about inevitably falling in love when you hadn’t planned to, it’s about the simultaneous thrill and terror of letting go and running with your feelings. Although the lyrics are personal, it feels like such a universal experience, and I wanted to capture this in the song. I wrote the song on cello, initially imagining it would be simple and acoustic… but as always, Nathan Cox (producer) and I ended up with hundreds of audio tracks, incorporating rubber bridge guitar, dense vocal multi-tracking, synths and drums, which really bring the narrative to life.”
