Dublin-based rising indie band Still Blue return with their latest single, ‘Brushstrokes’. This melancholic and elegant track marks another significant milestone in their rapidly growing career, following their television debut and ahead of a series of new releases scheduled for late 2024.

Known for their indie tendencies, Still Blue’s ‘Brushstrokes’ takes a step into more organic territory, blending acoustic warmth with a delicate yet powerful indie-folk sound. Built around soothing acoustic guitar tones, the track is layered with atmospheric electric guitar, understated drums, gentle piano, and swelling strings, creating an ethereal backdrop for lead singer Nicole Lyons’ soaring vocals and rich harmonies. The result is a beautifully crafted piece that balances introspection with emotional resonance.

Penned by Lyons, ‘Brushstrokes’ showcases the band’s most mature songwriting to date. Reflecting on the song’s meaning, Lyons explains: “It was one of those songs that just flowed. I wasn’t really sure what I was writing about until I let the song rest and came back to it a few months later. I wasn’t ready to accept what I was writing. I think a lot of times in relationships we want to ignore that ugly side and only choose to see the good. But that’s not love. *Brushstrokes* is about seeing a relationship for what it is, not what you want it to be.”

The track was recorded at Black Mountain Studios, with producer Alex Borwick helping to bring the song to life. Lyons also highlights the contributions of Kait Cullen-Verhauz on cello, whose presence adds depth and texture to the song’s reflective tone. “It always feels special working with such talented musicians,” Lyons says, “and having the space to try out random ideas.”

With TV appearances on Irish national TV and a growing hype surrounding the bands evolving sound, Still Blue are definitely one to watch into late 2024.
