New Jersey-based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer Carlotta Schmidt returns with her sophomore album ‘Overthinker’, centred around thought, emotion and self-reflection. The album was self-produced by Schmidt herself, exploring the experience of excessive thinking while maintaining a strong emotional and sonic identity throughout.
Wanting to maintain complete creative control, Schmidt explained that she had “a very clear vision” for every aspect of the album, spending hours refining arrangements, mixes, and smaller production details. Alongside her band, The Bold, featuring guitarist Mike Flynn, bassist Paul Avrutin, and drummer Lee Finkelstein of the original The Blues Brothers Band, who help the album’s instrumental dynamic.
The album opens with ‘Since You Never Asked’, which immediately sets the emotional tone through vulnerable songwriting and direct vocal delivery. However, there are moments where the mood shifts, on tracks such as ‘Woman Crush Wednesday’ and ‘Brother’, introducing more upbeat and groove-driven textures, balancing introspection with warmth and energy.
Schmidt manages to transition the mood smoothly, which doesn’t feel sudden, especially in the more reflective moments. For example, on tracks ‘I Just Want To Talk To You’ and ‘Now I Don’t Miss You Anymore’, where stripped-back instrumentation gives the emotional weight of the lyrics space to take centre stage. The album explores themes of identity, grief, acceptance, relationships, and self-worth which remain present throughout without feeling overstated.
Overthinker, is an album that feels carefully curated emotionally and sonically, showcasing Carlotta Schmidt as an artist who has the ability to create an album that speaks to many, while remaining deeply personal.
