NYC based singer-songwriter and guitarist Blair West has returned with the soft, dreamy and down right heavenly new single, the reminiscent ‘Nostalgia’. Featuring lo-fi production subtle synth work and feather-like harmonies, ‘Nostalgia’ is gentle, radiant and charming. Polished off with Blairs angelic, delicate and atmospheric vocals ‘Nostalgia’ is another enchanting invitation into her world. Reflecting on the memories of a past relationship ‘Nostalgia’ is tinged with sadness yet embraces the often residual emotions remaining when looking back at times gone-by.
“Nostalgia is a beautiful thing to experience – but also a painful one. Feeling nostalgic for something that no longer exists, or something that was taken away from you, or something you know you’ll never have again. That type of longing feels unique but totally universal, and I always wanted to write a song about it. It wasn’t until the pandemic, when I was feeling nostalgic for the everyday elements of pre-lockdown life, that the phrase “nostalgia is painful that way” came to be. And it couldn’t let it go. Finally, in late 2022, I started writing a new song around a simple guitar lick, and the melody quickly emerged, and the song came together from there (we love when that happens!).
In recording the song, it was important for me to tell a different type of story: one that felt different from the other songs I have released. While my earlier tracks were written like love letters, ‘Nostalgia’ is an exploration of a feeling. So, in the production process, I really wanted to challenge myself to lean into a more “maximalist” pop-centric sound. My sound will always be about acoustic simplicity, but ‘Nostalgia’ ups the ante with celestial synths, layered harmonies and anthemic strings. It’s a breakup song, after all :)”
