If ‘Recalibration’ was about looking inward, ‘RECALIBRATED’ is what happens when Amana Melome’ decides it is time to step back outside.
Across the new collection, the multidisciplinary singer-songwriter hands her recent material over to an international cast of producers and allows it to be transformed through deep house, soulful house, jazz-house, funk, disco and dub reggae. The emotional core remains intact, but the atmosphere has changed completely.
That shift is immediately clear on the opening remix of ‘SO DONE!’, reworked by Joel Holmes and Cee ElAssaad. Built around a deep, soulful house pulse, the song’s original sense of release becomes something far more physical. What began as a declaration of leaving old patterns behind now feels designed to be shared in a room full of people.
While Somos Animales bring a dub-reggae feel to ‘CON C.ALMA’, while Opolopo pushes ‘RECALIBRATION’ towards a brighter funk and disco setting. Godblesscomputers moves into jazz-house territory, and Deron Johnson’s jazz arrangement, produced by longtime collaborator Saverio Principini, introduces another tonal shift entirely.
The variety could easily have made the project feel fragmented, but the consistency comes from Melome’s songwriting and the larger idea behind the record.
One of the most interesting moments reaches even further into her catalogue. ‘SPACE AGE MAMA JAMA’, originally recorded for debut album ‘Indigo Red’, reappears more than a decade later. Its fearless central character now carries a different weight, sounding more like a reflection of the artist she has since become.
For Amana Melome’, recalibration was only the beginning. This time, the point is to turn it up and dance.
