ALLEY the band take aim at ego, pretension and empty promises on their shape-shifting new single ‘The Gift’.
Following June’s ‘Fantasize Romanticize’, the latest release finds the rock-and-rollers packing several different personalities into one track. Driving verses give vocalist Ali room for a commanding performance before the song suddenly opens into spacious, psychedelic choruses. Ferocious guitar work then pushes everything towards a joyous final stretch of soaring harmonies and anthemic rock.
Remarkably, ‘The Gift’ began with the first lyrics Ali ever wrote. Robbie already had the central riff, but their initial collaboration was shelved while the band concentrated on other material. Returning almost a year later proved transformative, allowing them to approach it without overthinking.
Lyrically, the band find humour in seeing through someone whose carefully constructed image is beginning to collapse. Rather than wallowing in bitterness, ‘The Gift’ calls out fakery with a grin, a raised eyebrow and just enough venom.
Formed in 2024 and now completed by Jaymie, Antony and Paul, ALLEY the band are already looking ahead, with another single planned for autumn.
