Oakland-based songwriter mxmtoon has released an antidote to the chaos of modern life, in the form of the purifying single, ‘I Feel Like Chet’.
With no instrumental introduction, ‘I Feel Like Chet’ opens with mxmtoon’s delicate vocal, which lends itself to a backdrop of a ukulele and a glockenspiel. Such a combination would normally reek of novelty, but on this single it oozes sincerity and makes for an almost calming experience.
Throughout the track, the ukulele floats along like a dandelion in the wind, whilst the softening chimes of the glockenspiel’s high notes, do just enough to texturize the sparse instrumentation. They even add a nostalgic, child-like naivety.
But it’s mxmtoon’s almost lazy, yet vulnerable delivery – reminiscent of fellow singer-songwriter Alexandra Savior’s – that makes this track so special.
When she admits to ‘‘listening to love songs” whilst longing for the day when she’ll truly fall in love, feelings of compassion and sadness are summoned, unrelentingly, to the forefront of the listener’s mind. It’s an instinctive reaction to the heart-breaking nature in which the revelations are confessed.
‘I Feel Like Chet’ may initially appear shy and small, but its ability to untie the knots in your stomach and cleanse the worries on your mind, if only for three minutes, means its impact is much bigger than its minimalism would first have the listener believe.
