Teenage R&B artist, Rai-Elle, has recently unveiled her debut single ‘KSB (Always On My Mind)’. To celebrate this, LOCK asked the London based singer a few questions about the new song, her time as an X-Factor 2017 finalist and more.
Hi Rai-Elle, thanks for chatting with LOCK Magazine. How does it feel to have finally released your debut single ‘KSB (Always On My Mind)’?
Like such an achievement. I’ve always wanted to release an original song and now after all of these years of being inspired by many different artists, I’ve finally been able to express myself through my own music.
Can you tell us about the creative process for ‘KSB (Always On My Mind)’?
Courage (producer) and I were in the studio and we started off with the type of vibe we wanted to create. I wanted to bring the “old school Rnb feels” back. The whole idea of the song is to explain an undeniable feeling towards someone or something. Knowing that this song had a mature subject I then focused on still making it sound youthful, so I made sure the chorus was cheeky and enjoyable.
From your time on last year’s X Factor, how much do you think it has prepared you for your career in the music industry? And what were your favourite moments from being on the show?
X Factor really helped me to discover myself as an artist; staying true to yourself is key in the music industry. I liked the fact that they had different themes because that meant that I had to step out of my comfort zone which is an important factor in personal growth.
This enabled me to understand the industry a bit more because in order to reach new heights, you can’t stay in your comfort zone! One of my favourite moments has got to be the six chair challenge. Singing a cappella and receiving the comments that I did, definitely made me feel like I was on top of the world and stood a chance in the competition.
Biggest musical influences?
My biggest musical influences are Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé and Michael Jackson.
Is there anyone you would really like to collaborate with?
H.E.R. Her voice is just angelic and her lyrical content is just on another level!
Finally, what’s next for Rai-Elle?
I will hopefully be releasing an EP by the end of this year and I just want to continue to grow and make music for people to enjoy listening to.
Stay up-to-date with Rai-Elle.
