Kate Lomas has a treat for our eyes and ears – the video premiere for her track ‘Happy Like This’, a chilled out yet defiant ode to living in the moment which has already been featured in the Spotify New Pop Revolution playlist.
The video makes use of a retro American style – think vintage Coca Cola t-shirts and muted filters – whilst Lomas struts about on a roof and gets drunk at a house party. She rides bikes, holds a massive cake with a sparkler in it, swims in a pool, eats Cornflakes straight out of the box and does all of these actions with undeniable joy as she reassures us that “when your mind begins to blink… I’ll be waiting for you.” If you’re not envious of the clothes, you’ll be envious of all her friends who get to hang out with her. Lomas is at the forefront and centre of the video and commands the screen with a self-assurance which is prevalent in the lyrics of the song as well.
With a success story like Lomas has amassed over the last 12 months, this confidence doesn’t come as a surprise. She has made it onto the BBC Radio 1 playlist, performed a live session for BBC Introducing at Maida Vale studios and has even made her Glastonbury debut.
With this latest track and the video which accompanies it, Lomas reminds us of the importance of accepting where you are and living a carefree life. With a co-producer credit under her belt, it seems that this is a message which is very personal to Lomas and it’s one worth repeating – “we are happy like this” is the shout-along line of the chorus. Lomas herself sings it into the camera throughout the video with a smile on her face, leading us into a new carefree way of living – accepting any imperfections and being totally present.
This video comes in advance of her headline show at Thousand Island in London this Autumn.
