EP: No Steps Back by MEI

If you love soul, you’re going to fall for MEI.

MEI is a South London artist, oozing soul and catchy beats to get you bopping as we head into Spring. I Don’t Know What’s Next is taken from MEI’s winter-influenced EP, No Steps Back, and spreads a message of positivity.

I Don’t Know What’s Next is an ode to self-love, allowing MEI to explore her life’s path. Her lyrics reflect the thoughts of a generation, encouraging herself and the  listener not to fear the next step in the journey of life and to embrace every option available. The lyric “I’m ready for what comes next” is a message of self-assurance, solidifying a positive state of mind which is transferred from the steady beat straight to those listening.

MEI describes I Don’t Know What’s Next as the most personal song she’s ever written, explaining “The relationship you have with yourself is so important and this song documents my personal growth”.

Dance to Pain allows MEI to unleash her vocal. The soulful, warming tones in her voice melt into the track, providing an escape into the sunshine. The song was inspired by Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as The Joker, dancing on the steps on Gotham in that iconic scene from the 2019 film.

Our favourite track from MEI is Sore. The song explores the reality of placing the responsibility of a tough situation into the hands of someone else, and the new found freedom of allowing yourself to soar. The satisfying beat is sure to get you moving and you’ll know all the words to chorus after just a couple of listens.

Sore is the perfect example of MEI’s sound: a combination of soul, R&M rhythms and effortless rap.

So if you need a ray of sunshine in this period of social distancing, you need MEI on your playlist!
