Fast rising US singer-songwriter Liz Asaro is currently gearing up for the release of her brand new single ‘Take Me Home’, which is dropping on April 16th. So, we caught up with her to talk about the new release, musical inspirations, future plans and more.
Hi Liz, thanks for talking to LOCK. So, growing up, was music always a passion of yours?
LIZ: Well yes, but I wasn’t always making music. Most of my free time was spent playing sports when I was in school; I was extremely active in soccer through college. However, I always made sure music was all around me. I was always listening, going to shows, sharing my new favourite bands. I love how great music makes me feel.
When did you first realise that music was going to be your career choice?
LIZ: After I had my kids! I was a commercial interior designer, so I was doing something artistic before music. Honestly I just didn’t know my way into the music world. Once I figured that out, and it was from my kids’ guitar teacher, who told me I could take a rock band class (I’m not kidding), I just kept networking my way through the industry. Now I play with people who played with Bowie, Blondie, and the list goes on! I am truly blessed.
How would you describe your sound to new listeners?
LIZ: It’s alternative rock. It’s got a mix of real guitars, real bass, real drums, with some modern electronic programming in there to make it pop and keep it current. Vocals move between ethereal and rock, so they sit on top of the instruments to tell the story effectively. It’s edgy, but very listenable from a pop rock perspective.
What is the main inspiration behind your new single ‘Take Me Home’?
LIZ: It’s about my friend Mark Martinez, who passed away suddenly a few years ago. I’ve never met anyone who grabbed life by the balls the way he did. He always chased his dreams and passions, and amazingly inspired everyone he knew to do the same. He truly made the most of his time here on earth, in this life.
What do you hope fans take from the song?
LIZ: I hope they think of the whole earth as their home, not just the specific place they live. I hope they explore it, embrace it and take care of it. I hope they listen to their inner voices and do what they love, for their own sake and the sake of others. Make the most of every day, like Mark did. It sounds so cliché, but when you know someone who really truly epitomises this, it’s a great reminder that it’s not only possible, but also recommended!!
The single is dropping on April 16th, can we expect an album to follow after that?
LIZ: Yup! I have another single and a 5 song EP coming very soon after! Songs being mixed as we speak!
Do you have any touring plans lined up for this year?
LIZ: Yes. No specific dates yet, but discussions have begun to book dates in the UK and the US.
Finally, what do you hope to achieve over the course of your career?
Honestly, everything I can! I have already had the honour of working with some amazing players, writers, engineers, etc. I love everything about sharing music. I love being the listener and I love being the one to deliver it. I want to keep writing and recording, I want to tour, I want to play big venues, as well as the smaller more intimate ones. I just want to interact with as many great players and great listeners as possible! I, like most musicians, want to move as many people as possible with my music.
